Australian Aerospace, Queensland: This project is a hangar to store fuelled military aircraft. NFPA 409 Standard on Aircraft Hangars and AS 2118 Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems mandate two fire pumps for such facilities.

  • A fire engineered solution demonstrated that a single fire pump would not compromise the overall fire risk to the facility.
  • The proposed single pump solution was accepted by the building control officer, the airport fire brigade officer, and the insurer. It was the first single pump aircraft hangar solution for an Australian aircraft hangar.

AMMROC, UAE: Third party review of the $2 Billion Al Ain Military Repair and Overhaul Centre, consisting of 6 aircraft hangars, a hazardous materials storage building, a large headquarters office building, substation buildings, and a 10,000m2 ground services engineering building.

  • Contractor requested solutions to identified non-compliances.
  • Alternative solutions allowed the contractor to bid competitively and with confidence.

  • Analysis reviewed the existing fire protection measures, potential fire sizes from spills, radiation maps, and current standard requirements.
  • Recommended necessary upgrades to comply with performance-based provisions.

King Abdulaziz International Airport Hangars, Saudi Arabia: Design review for the $6 Billion aircraft hangar facility consisting of 18 large aircraft hangars, repair workshops, and dangerous goods storage.

  • Developed Fire Engineering solutions which allowed the service corridors to be used as a means of escape and for transporting materials between hangars, without any smoke control measures.
  • Developed Fire engineering solution to omit passive fire rated walls between hangar bays.
  • Developed an emergency lighting strategy whereby lux levels lower than the prescribed 10.8 lux levels mandated by NFPA & IBC.
